What Can You Get Reimbursed for Your
Relocation?
You finally got that great job offer and the
company is paying to move you across the
country, or at least more than 50 miles away.
You’ll be leaving behind the people and
lifestyle you've grown accustomed to. Employers
know that moving is a big inconvenience and will
often have some kind of relocation compensation
package.
Here are some things that companies might
include as relocation assistance. Of course the
basics start with a moving truck, but you might
be surprised by some of the other perks.
- Autos:
Transfer of vehicles to your new location;
there can be certain restrictions to the
number of vehicles, etc.
- Childcare
assistance: A list of day-care
providers and possible reimbursement for
special situations.
- Cultural
training: For international moves, a
class on what to expect in the new culture.
- Elder-care
assistance: A list of nursing homes
or care centers.
- Full pack:
A van line packs all your household goods and
transports them to your new home. Any special
moving needs should be discussed beforehand.
- Full unpack:
At your new home, the van line unloads all
boxes and furniture where you wish.
- Home-finding
trip: A visit to your future city
(including airfare, hotel, rental car, and
meals) so that you can find a home, schools,
etc.
- Home buying
services: Help with the payment of
closing costs, mortgage points, buy down or
other fees relating to a home purchase.
- Home sale
services: Help with the payment of
closing costs and commissions on the sale of
your home.
- Lease break
coverage: Covers the penalty charges
for breaking a rental lease contract.
- Miscellaneous
expenses: Out-of-pocket expenses like
carpet cleaning, drapery installation, utility
hook-ups, vehicle registration and other
incidentals could be reimbursed. Make sure to
find out whether you will get a lump sum
payment or be reimbursed for certain expenses.
- Property
management: Homeowners on
international or short-term assignments will
have a property management company take care
of rental and upkeep of their home.
- Spousal job
support: Employment assistance for an
accompanying spouse or partner.
- Storage:
For short overseas assignments or temporary
housing situations, covers the cost of putting
your household items in a storage facility.
- Temporary
housing: Furnished housing is
provided if your new home isn't immediately
available.
- Transportation:
Cost of getting you to your new destination by
plane, train or automobile.
- Travel:
Occasional return airfare home provided for
short, unaccompanied assignments or when the
family is not scheduled to move for a few
months.
