Protecting Your Home while You Are Away
When you're away from home for a while,
you’ll be leaving your home and treasured
belongings behind and unattended. What can you
do to make sure your home stays safe while
you're away? See the list below.
- Newspapers:
Call your newscarrier to discontinue
deliveries.
- Mail:
Notify the post office of your absence and
have them hold your mail.
- Yard maintenance:
Arrange for your yard to be maintained,
especially your front yard.
- Police:
Notify the local police department about your
departure and return dates. Also give them a
name and number to contact in case of
emergency.
-
Neighbor/relative: Have a neighbor or
relative keep an eye on your house and give
them a number where they can reach you in case
of emergency.
- Electrical:
Unplug electrical appliances like toasters,
television sets, stereos and clock radios to
prevent possible damage from electrical
storms.
- Windows and
doors: Close and lock all windows and
sliding doors. Use window locks or bars for
extra security.
- Lights:
Set timers on a few lamps to make the house
looks occupied.
- Water:
Turn the water off to avoid leaks or damage.
- Shades:
Leave some shades open so the home doesn't
look vacant and for police or neighbors to be
able to look inside.
- Alarm:
Turn on your home alarm system.
